Assessing the Expected Benefits of Electronic Data Interchange through Simulation Modelling Techniques

چکیده
This paper presents the development of a simulation model for the assessment of the expected benefits from the implementation of EDI. The model simulates trading between a number of companies at three sequential stages of production. The simulation keeps track of inventory levels in order to assess the efficiency gains on inventory management introduced by EDI. This model has been applied to three industries in Greece: textiles, pharmaceuticals and supermarkets. The paper documents the development of the simulation techniques and the inventory management and trading models used. The merits of the approach are assessed, avenues for further research are explored and the managerial implications are finally discussed.

Modelling Electronic Data Interchange through Simulation: an Industry-wide Perspective
Business process modelling (BPM) is an emerging field of simulation application. Simulation of business processes is increasingly being recognised as an extremely useful tool for assessing the feasibility, efficiency, and effectiveness of process re-engineering decisions. However, almost all of the reported experience is confined to re-engineering initiatives within a single organisation. The p...

The assessment of Information Systems (IS) benefits is an important practical problem in IS investment appraisal. In this paper, after briefly reviewing the nature of IS benefits, we argue that an incremental measurement approach can help an organisation obtain quantitative estimates of expected IS impacts on business performance. Such an approach should start from quantifiable benefits directl...

The evaluation and appraisal of investments in Information Technology is one of the earliest problems of IS/IT management and continues to be one of the most puzzling ones. This paper briefly reviews the inherent difficulties of evaluating IT investments and identifies measurement as one of the most important. We focus on the quantitative measurement of the expected benefits of Information Syst...

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is commonly defined as an application-to-application transfer of business documents between computers using industry-defined standards which enable organizations to send and receive business communications more quickly, flexibly, cheaply, and with higher security than conventional communications. With improvements in the quality and affordability of data commun...

The Highway Safety Manual [HSM, 2010] recommends safety evaluations be performed before implementing any roadway treatment to predict the expected safety consequences. Safety consequences can be measured using crash prediction models, Crash Modification Factor (CMFs), or both. This paper develops a CMF to show the expected impact of red-light cameras (RLCs) on safety at signalized intersections...
